GLOBE, a History:

GLOBE started in 1993 under the direction of the Snohomish Health District and the Snohomish County AIDS Consortium, when a small group of gay and lesbian youth expressed the need to find support to deal with the many issues they were facing as adolescents, and more specifically as gay and lesbian adolescents.  These youth reported fear about coming out to family and friends as well as harassment at school and in the community.  In January of 2007, GLOBE transitioned to become a program of the Everett/Snohomish PFLAG and continues to provide a unique and critical service to Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning (GLBTQ) youth and their families in Snohomish County.

The acronym GLOBE initially meant Gay, Lesbian, Open-minded, Bisexual Empowerment.  In 2004 the youth attending the group created a new acronym in order to be inclusive of transgender youth.  GLOBE now means GLBTQ, Loving Ourselves Becoming Empowered.

More info:
GLOBE serves a critical and unique role in supporting and educating Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning (GLBTQ) youth ages 14-20 living in Snohomish County and surrounding communities. Youth are able to receive support in a safe and substance free environment.  They are also provided with opportunities to participate in a speaker’s bureau in order to provide community education and advocacy to other organizations and schools within Snohomish County.

GLOBE meets on a weekly basis for a two hour support group and serves approximately 15-25 GLBTQ youth a week. There is an average of 1-3 new youth who attend each week in addition to youth who have been participating in GLOBE for at least 3 years. At GLOBE, youth have in-depth discussions about coming out, anti-gay harassment, gender identity, HIV, STDs, safer sex, Viral Hepatitis, tobacco cessation, substance abuse, depression, spirituality,  healthy relationships, self-esteem and much, much more.  Collaboration occurs with local organizations to provide education, information and testing for HIV, STDs, Viral Hepatitis as well as other critical health issues.

GLOBE is a highly respected program by youth, parents and providers within Snohomish County and surrounding counties.  GLOBE is a resource for parents to seek support and to know that their youth are getting the support and guidance that they can trust.  GLOBE is very active in community collaboration and advocacy.  It is seen as a critical resource by other service providers, particularly those serving youth and families.  As an organization that is supported by PFLAG (Parents and Friends of Lesbians & Gays), GLOBE works closely with PFLAG to provide support for parents, family members and friends of GLBTQ youth.
